Hotelbeds Group gathers more than 100 developers from all over Europe in its first tourist innovation Hackathon
THackMallorca is the latest initiative in Hotelbeds Group’s continuing quest to reshape travel through technological innovation.
Hotelbeds Group, the global provider of travel services, has held from the 6th to 8th of May, its first Hackathon focused on tourism and hospitality resulting from its firm quest for technological innovation. The online technology magazine Tnooz and Hotelbeds Group jointly organized the event, which has gathered more than 100 developers from all over Europe.
ThackMallorca is the first event of these characteristics held in Mallorca, which has for the first time gathered the leading technological companies of the industry such as Booking, Rome2Rio, Xapix.io, Musement or Minube in order to share their APIs with the participants of the competition. Hotelbeds Group shared APItude, its suite of hotel and activity distribution APIs and TaxiTime, its global taxi and private car instant hailing app.
Organized in two different contests (professionals and students) over the course of 3 days, hundreds of developers competed in 17 teams of 5 people each. The purpose was to find solutions to the challenges that today’s travellers have to face due to mobile technology's impact on the travel trade industry. The competition included different challenges based on two popular topics: spontaneous travel inspiration and assistance by new messaging bots to ease search drudgery.
Team Zoe, from Trivago, was awarded 'Best Large Team' with a 1,500€ prize. Team Zoe developed a prototype chat bot to use on Facebook, Telegram and other messaging services. Using preferences revealed by machine learning searches of a user’s social graph, the chat bot explored activities in Hotelbeds' API and delivered hotel options through Booking.com’s API.
Among university participants, a team of three students from Ukraine, Team LNU, captured millennials' demands in travel. Team LNU built a messenger bot drawing information from the Hotelbeds and Rome2Rio APIs. The project won 'Best Student Team' and ‘People's Choice' prizes winning a total of 2,000€.
ThackMallorca is one of the various initiatives defined within The Tourist Innovation Professorship created by The University of Balearic Islands (UIB) and Hotelbeds Group last September. The aim is to share knowledge between the industry and the university through tangible initiatives such as events, conferences or hackathons.
